DVLA Engages Stakeholders Ahead of New Vehicle Registration Number Plate Rollout
The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority has engaged stakeholders on its new Vehicle Registration Number Plate initiative, set to take effect from January 2026 to April 2027.
At the stakeholders engagement held at the Ashanti Regional DVLA office at Airport Roundabout on December 3rd, 2025, key stakeholders including road safety officials, police officers, and drivers’ unions and overs were taken through the features and purpose of the upcoming number plate system.
The Deputy Chief Executive Officer of the DVLA, Lawyer Foster Akwasi Asante, told reporters that the engagement was organized to educate stakeholders on how the new system will operate and why it is necessary, he explained that the DVLA wants to gather feedback, address concerns, and ensure a smooth rollout next year.
According to him, research has shown that issues such as duplicated number plates often happen due to the activities of goro boys. He noted that with Ghana’s digital transformation agenda, it has become important to modernize the vehicle registration system.
The new number plates will be equipped with a Radio Frequency Identification Device, RFID, which will act like a SIM to help track vehicle movements, enhance security, and assist in identifying and punishing offenders.
Lawyer Asante assured the public that the DVLA is committed to ensuring the successful implementation of the initiative and maintaining a more secure and efficient vehicle registration system.
The Assistant Planning Manager for the National Road Safety Authority in the Ashanti Region Mr Samuel Adu Gyimah has commended the DVLA’s upcoming number plate initiative, stressing that the modernized system will strengthen vehicle security, enhance road safety, and help reduce accidents.
