Ashanti NPP Youth Challenge Clergy to Respond to Mahama’s LGBTQI+ Position
The New Patriotic Party youth in the Ashanti Region are calling on the clergy to speak out against recent comments made by President John Dramani Mahama on LGBTQI+ issues, stating yesterday that the issue is not his top priority.
At a press conference held earlier today, the group led by Dr. Keskine Owusu Poku, an aspiring Ashanti Regional Communications Officer urged religious leaders not to remain silent, stressing what they describe as the moral and cultural implications of the former president’s remarks.
According to the group, faith leaders play a crucial role in shaping societal values and must take a firm stance on matters they believe affect the country’s traditions and beliefs.
They further called on the public to critically assess the comments and encouraged broader national dialogue on the issue.
The statement forms part of ongoing political and social discussions in Ghana surrounding LGBTQI+ rights and governance, an issue that continues to generate strong reactions from political actors, civil society, and religious groups.
On the other hand, Lawyer Kingsley Bonsu Kyeretwie, aspirant Deputy Secretary for the New Patriotic Party NPP, Ashanti Region, also in an interview with the media, stressed on the legal backing of the which makes it easy for the president's assent.
