“WOULD YOU HAVE CUT COCOA PRICES IN AN ELECTION YEAR?” – ANNOH-DOMPREH CHALLENGES MAHAMA

The Minority Chief Whip, Frank Annoh-Dompreh, has intensified criticism over the government’s decision to reduce cocoa producer prices, questioning whether John Dramani Mahama would have taken such a step in an election year.

Speaking during an engagement with cocoa farmers at Akokoamon in the Tano North Constituency of the Ahafo Region, Mr. Annoh-Dompreh suggested the timing of the price reduction may be politically motivated. He argued that the government could be planning to adjust prices closer to elections to win voter support, describing the move as unfair to farmers.

The controversy follows the government’s decision to reduce the cocoa producer price from GH¢3,625 to GH¢2,587 per bag. Authorities have defended the move, citing financial challenges within the Ghana Cocoa Board, including debt pressures and declining productivity.

However, opposition figures, including the Member of Parliament for Tano North, Gideon Boako, have criticised the decision, accusing the government of failing to fulfil promises made to cocoa farmers.

Farmers at the meeting also expressed frustration over rising production costs and warned that the price cut could further threaten their livelihoods if urgent interventions are not implemented.
