Energy Sector: IPPs Now Receiving Full Payments as ECG Revenue Improves-Minister

The Minister for Energy and Green Transition, Dr. John Abdulai Jinapor, says Independent Power Producers IPPs are now receiving full payment for invoices submitted to the ministry, a sharp improvement from the 42 percent payment rate before the current administration took office.

“This month when I checked, IPPs had received 100 percent of their invoices. The one to have received the least is 80 percent of invoices raised,”_ Dr. Jinapor said during a working tour of key electricity infrastructure projects in Kumasi on Friday.

According to the minister, major IPPs in the energy sector are now operating smoothly due to government’s decision to release funds on time.

He listed Sunon Asogli, Senit Energy, AKSA Thermal, AKSA Kumasi, Amandi Power, Early Power, WALCO Energy, Mine Energy, and BSC Power as having received 100 percent of invoices raised, while Karpowership received 80 percent.

Dr. Jinapor credited the improvement to the Electricity Company of Ghana’s increased revenue collection.

“Before we assumed office, some of the IPPs had cut off supply of power to the national grid,” he said.

"Just yesterday I was with the President and I showed him some data on the Cash Waterfall and he was surprised we are achieving that feat because before we assumed office almost all IPPs were receiving 42 percent of their bills.”

The tour was aimed at inspecting ongoing transformer upgrade and replacement works, as well as other critical energy projects intended to improve power supply and reliability in the Ashanti Region.

As part of the visit, the minister met with top leadership, engineers, and other stakeholders in the regional energy sector.
