MP and Agric Minister Now a Stranger in His Own Constituency - Kukuom Cocoa Farmers
Cocoa farmers in Ahafo Kukuom, Asunafo South, say their Member of Parliament, Hon. Eric Opoku who doubles as the Minister of Food and Agriculture has refused to grant tjem audience following government's decision to reduce prices of cocoa beans.
The farmers have , accused the Minister of making false promises during the 2024 campaign.
The said this when the Minority in Parliament lead by Frank Annor-Dompreh engaged them as part of their tour of cocoa farms in the Ahafo region
The farmers claim Opoku promised them GH₵6,000 per bag of cocoa if they voted for the NDC, but the price was instead reduced to GH₵2,500.
The farmers are particularly upset that Opoku has not been seen in the constituency since the price reduction and are demanding an apology for his alleged lies.
This isn't an isolated incident; similar protests have erupted in other cocoa-growing regions, with farmers feeling deceived and angry.
The NDC had campaigned on a promise to increase cocoa prices, but the government now cites global market conditions and fiscal constraints as reasons for the reduction.
The farmers, however, see this as a betrayal of trust and are calling for accountability.
