Ashanti Fire Service Marks International Firefighters Day, Condemns Attacks on Personnel

The Ashanti Regional Command of the Ghana National Fire Service has commemorated the 2026 International Firefighters Day with a strong call for an end to assaults on firefighters and their equipment.

The event, held at the Ashanti Regional Fire Service Headquarters at Chirapatre on May 4, 2026, was observed under the theme:  Attack on Firefighters and Equipment is an Attack on Public Safety: End Assaults and Protect the Firefighter.

The ceremony brought together officers, stakeholders, and members of the public to honor the dedication and sacrifice of firefighters, particularly remembering five personnel who lost their lives in the line of duty.

Addressing the gathering, the Ashanti Regional Fire Commander, ACFO I Peter Tetteh, condemned the increasing incidents of attacks on firefighters during emergency operations. He emphasized that such actions not only endanger the lives of fire officers but also put communities at greater risk.

According to him, firefighters are committed to protecting lives and property during fire outbreaks, and therefore deserve the full cooperation and support of the public.

ACFO I Peter Tetteh also highlighted ongoing efforts by the Service to intensify public education on fire prevention and basic firefighting techniques. He urged citizens to adhere to safety guidelines to help reduce the occurrence of fire outbreaks.

He further called on firefighters to maintain and properly manage the limited equipment available to them while awaiting government intervention to supply additional resources, including fire tenders.
