Ashanti GJA, RSF Germany to Train Journalists on Safe Environmental Reporting for World Environment Day

The Ashanti Regional branch of the Ghana Journalists Association, in partnership with Reporters Without Borders Germany, will mark World Environment Day 2026 with a training programme to equip journalists with skills for safe and responsible environmental reporting.

The initiative targets selected journalists and aims to strengthen their capacity to report accurately on environmental issues while protecting themselves, especially when covering high-risk areas such as illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey.

“Journalists play a key role in shaping public understanding and promoting sustainable development through accurate and ethical reporting. "

" But we must also protect ourselves in the line of duty,”* Ashanti GJA Chairman Kofi Adu Domfeh said ahead of the programme.

Participants will receive training in environmental journalism, responsible reporting on mining activities, risk assessment, conflict-sensitive reporting, and safety measures for volatile environments.

Speakers include Ashanti Regional EPA Director Jackson Adiyah Nyantakyi, environmental journalist Erastus Asare Donkor, criminologist Dr. Jones Opoku-Ware of KNUST, and Chairman Domfeh.

Organisers say the training is timely as environmental concerns linked to mining and degradation dominate national discourse.

They noted that journalists investigating illegal mining and environmental damage have increasingly faced threats, intimidation, physical attacks, and accidents.

Regional Vice Chairman Nicholas Osei Wusu, speaking with OTEC News Reporter Kwame Agyenim Boateng , on Wednesday stressed the need for enhanced safety awareness.

He said the programme is expected to strengthen collaboration among journalists, regulators, and mining stakeholders while promoting professional, fact-based reporting.

This year’s World Environment Day is being observed under the theme: “Inspired by Nature. For Climate. For Our Future.”
